Nokia, Motorola, Haier Bolster China's WAPI Standard |
Nokia (NYSE:NOK) has released its first handset that supports China's WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure (WAPI) wireless Internet standard, reports 163.com. Nokia planned to release a handset customized for wireless music through a partnership with China Mobile (NYSE:CHL, 941.HK) in early June, said the report.
China Unicom's (NYSE:CHU, 762.HK, 600050.SH) WAPI-supportive handsets, Motorola's (NYSE:MOT) "A3100" and Haier's (1169.HK, 600690.SH) "HC-80," will be released around June 18, reports ccw.net.cn quoting a quality control chief at MIIT's China Telecommunication Technology Labs. Ten WAPI mobile terminals are in or have finished network entry testing, and WAPI is in commercial operation, said the chief.
The WAPI standard has won approval from more than ten countries, including the U.S., the U.K. and France, which participated in a recent organizational meeting for international standards, reports China Business News quoting a chief of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's (MIIT) broadband, wireless and IP standard team on June 15. WAPI will be promoted as an international standard as a solely text service, said the report.
